Franz Welser-Möst has always meticulously prepared the New Year’s concerts in his home city of Vienna. Now he comes to Dresden to conduct the New Year’s Eve concert, where he will introduce a German Strauss to the Viennese Strausses. Although this marriage might seem surprising, it cannot be denied that Dresden and Vienna are closer than most people think. The Saxon capital was an early victim of »Strauss mania«. Just a few weeks after Johann Strauss Jr. celebrated his first hit with the »Annen Polka« in 1852, he went on tour through Germany with his ensemble. The first stop was Dresden. And it is entirely possible that he found here the inspiration for the operetta »Waldmeister«, which is set near the city.
