Looking ahead

In his last season as Intendant of Saxon State Opera, Peter Theiler is continuing his artistic vision for the Semperoper with no fewer than 10 premieres, including three world premieres and one German premiere, in opera and ballet as well as the Junge Szene programme.

The upcoming 2023/24 season will offer international audiences not only new productions featuring brilliant artists but also the return of long-awaited and popular repertoire pieces, the second outing of the »Richard Strauss Days at the Semperoper« and a diverse range of special events.

In the opera section, you can expect the premieres of »Turandot« by Giacomo Puccini in the staging of Marie-Eve Signeyrole and Heiko Hentschel; the world premiere of »Die Jüdin von Toledo« by Detlev Glanert, commissioned by the Saxon State Opera and staged by Robert Carsen; »Die Frau ohne Schatten« by Richard Strauss under the baton of Christian Thielemann and in the staging of David Bösch; »Káťa Kabanová/ Katja Kabanowa« by Leoš Janáček, staged by Calixto Bieito; and Hector Berlioz’s »Benvenuto Cellini« in the staging of Barbora Horáková Joly.

In Semper Zwei, the operas »Powder Her Face« by Thomas Adès, staged by Georg Schmiedleitner, and »Woyzeck« by Robert Wilson/ Tom Waits/ Kathleen Brennan, staged by Manfred Weiß, will celebrate their premieres.

For the Semperoper Ballet, star choreographer Johan Inger creates his interpretation of »Swan Lake« – the classic awaits you as a world premiere. The second ballet premiere is the three-part ballet evening »Plot Point« with the pieces »Serenade« by George Balanchine, the eponymous »Plot Point« by Crystal Pite and »In The Upper Room« by Twyla Tharp. Another ballet world premiere will take place in Semper Zwei: »Der 35. Mai oder Konrad reitet in die Südsee« based on the book by Erich Kästner, commissioned by the Saxon State Opera, choreographed by Raphaël Coumes-Marquet and composed by Gordon Kampe.
