And more
In brief
What triggers jealousy? Is it love? Perhaps fear? Riccardo, the Governor of Boston, has as many supposed friends as enemies lurking in the shadows. When Renato, his secretary and best friend, realises that Riccardo loves his wife, Amelia, a fateful rift occurs: Renato joins the conspirators intending to assassinate Riccardo at a masked ball. The latter, having had his death foretold by the fortune-teller Ulrica, throws himself into the chronicle of his announced death with an almost pain-intoxicated delight.
With Un ballo in maschera, Giuseppe Verdi (1813–1901) achieved a truly singular work. From the very first bar, the music flows in a way that makes it impossible to separate the moments of wit and farce from the tragedy and the darkness.
After Falstaff, Principal Conductor Daniele Gatti once again ascends the Staatskapelle rostrum for the opening run of performances, bringing this vivid, multifaceted score to life. Angela Denoke, a globally celebrated singer who has recently turned her talents to stage directing, makes her directorial debut at the Semperoper Dresden with this delicate dance between love and loyalty.
