The art of Lied interpretation takes centre stage at our Semper Matinées and Semper Soirees. Lieder can be described as mini-dramas for voice and piano, artistically crafted musical miniatures that are sometimes entertaining, sometimes challenging. In part reflecting the focus of the opera programme, Semper Matinées and Semper Soirees are exciting excursions into diverse musical worlds. They also offer the opportunity to get to know a completely different side of ensemble members away from the main stage.

The focus of our Semper matinées and soirées is the art of song. Thematically linked (at least in part) with the opera repertoire, these smaller formats offer interesting excursions into familiar and less well-known musical worlds. But they also give audiences the chance to get to know an entirely different side to the members of the Semperoper ensemble. As a nod to Gioachino Rossini’s »Guillaume Tell/William Tell«, the matinée and soirée series for the 2020/21 season begins with the »Péchés de vieillesse/Sins of Old Age«, a wonderful collection of works that Rossini composed for private use after his retirement from the world of opera. The new production of Udo Zimmermann’s chamber opera »Weiße Rose« in Semper Zwei is reason enough to dedicate a song matinée to composers persecuted by the Nazi regime, under the title »Forbidden Music«. A summertime music programme will bring the season to a fitting conclusion.
