Opera

Aida

Giuseppe Verdi

Christmas Eve, 1871. In Cairo’s newly built opera house, the curtain rises on the premiere of Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida. This is a turning point in cultural history, when an occidental passion for exoticism and an oriental interest in European high culture come together to create great art.

Very few works of opera have achieved such widespread popularity. And rightly so: with its thrilling musical effects, exotic sounds and tableaux, the colourful instrumentation and monumental scenes alternating with moments of great intimacy, Aida is a true musical and dramatic treasure trove. And that’s not all. Through the tragic love affair between the Ethiopian princess Aida and the Egyptian army commander Radamès, torn between the interests of state, church and family, Giuseppe Verdi reflects on the crisis-ridden plight of the modern individual, ending with a highly moving plea for the utopian power of love.

Making-of

Aida – Making-of (2)

The Principal Conductor of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden has never conducted Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida – he describes himself as an Aida novice. But it is not only Christian Thielemann who tries to inspire the audience with Verdi’s sounds, stage director Katharina Thalbach also wants to seduce with her production. In our second part of the Aida-making-of, the two met for a conversation in the lower church of the Frauenkirche.

Aida – Making-of (3)

Every minute of music is beautiful, says Krassimira Stoyanova about Verdi’s score. In our new production staged by Katharina Thalbach, the world-renowned soprano sings the Ethiopian princess Aida, whose love for the Egyptian army commander Radamès leads to their death. In our third part of the Aida making-ofs, Krassimira Stoyanova talks about the subtleties of her role and the music, as well as her work with Katharina Thalbach.

Aida – Making-of (1)

Ezio Toffolutti has designed the stage set for Katharina Thalbach’s production. The large golden room is not only to provide space for the scenes with chorus and dancers, but also to create the atmosphere of the intimate scenes of the love triangle of Radamès, Aida and Amneris. Ezzio Toffolutti and Raphael Gwosch, Head of the Construction Department, give a few insights in our first Aida making-of.
