Issey Miyake

Costume Design

Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake grew up in his hometown of Hiroshima and studied graphic design at the Tama Art Academy in Tokyo. In 1964, he left Japan and worked in Paris as a designer for Guy Laroche and Hubert de Givenchy, later in New York for Geoffrey Beene until he founded his own studio in Tokyo in 1970 and presented his first own collection in New York in 1971. Since then, Issey Miyake was regarded as one of the most important international fashion designers, and his creations were regularly shown at Paris Fashion Week since 1973. Issey Miyake's work was characterized, among other things, by technical innovations in the field of fabric development and processing, as well as cutting and folding techniques. In 1999 Issey Miyake gave his role for Paris Collection to his associate designer in his Studio; since then he started to create new innovative lines such as »A-POC« and »132 5.ISSEY MIYAKE«. He also curated the design museum called »21_21 Design Sight« which is located in central Tokyo.
