Piece-Info

This screening of the famous silent film »Der Rosenkavalier« by Wolfgang Wiene from 1926 is a very special experience for both the eyes and the ears: under the baton of Frank Strobel, a specialist for music from the silent era, the Staatskapelle Dresden will accompany this celluloid version of Richard Strauss’s most popular opera »Der Rosenkavalier«. The film music was specially adapted by the composer himself. For its time, this production was both unusual and innovative. Many challenges had to be overcome in transferring an opera, which lives from the sung word, to the silent screen, such as synchronising a live orchestra with the projection or the development of a truly cinematic narrative structure, which required the introduction of new scenes and music. This reconstructed version from 2006 successfully recreates the original film and score to resurrect the envisaged »composition« of moving image and orchestral tone poem while sensitively replacing the lost final section.
