Richard Strauss Days 2024 at the Semperoper

Dresden, 7 March 2024. Over the Easter holidays, the Semperoper and the Staatskapelle are once again presenting a series of events specially dedicated to Richard Strauss, focusing on the work of the great composer and his connection to Dresden. The programme, which runs from 27 March to 7 April 2024, will feature selected works documenting Strauss’s close relationship with the Saxon capital and, in particular, the Staatskapelle.

Highlights include performances of the new production of »Die Frau ohne Schatten« (The Woman without a Shadow) with a star-studded cast conducted by Christian Thielemann as well as the revival of »Elektra« with Doris Soffel in the role of Klytaemnestra, John Lundgren as Orest, the role debut of Gabriela Scherer and the Semperoper debut of Kelly God.

A song recital with Christiane Karg and pianist Gerold Huber entitled »Lieder seines Lebens« (Songs of His Life) on 31 March 2024 will offer insights into the rich oeuvre of Richard Strauss.

Audience members are sure to enjoy the screening – accompanied by live music – of a reconstructed version of the 1926 silent film »Der Rosenkavalier« by director Robert Wiene. On 28 March 2024, Frank Strobel, Artistic Director of the European FilmPhilharmonic Orchestra and a leading expert in the interdisciplinary field of film and music, will conduct the Staatskapelle at this event. An introduction to the topic by conductor Frank Strobel will take place before the film starts, at 6.15 pm in the Opernkeller (cellar) of the Semperoper.

The programme of the »Richard Strauss Days at the Semperoper« will be brilliantly complemented by the Staatskapelle’s 5th Chamber Music Evening with soprano Katerina von Bennigsen and the non-subscription concerts on 6 and 7 April 2024 conducted by Sir Antonio Pappano.
