Young Soon Hue-Simon
Ballet Master

Young Soon Hue was born in Incheon, South Korea, and began her ballet studies at the Sunwha Art School in Seoul. Young Soon Hue went on to study at the Académie de Danse Classique de Princesse Grace in Monte-Carlo/ Monaco.

Her professional ballet career as a dancer began with the Frankfurt Ballet, followed by the Zürich Ballet. She was a soloist with the Basel Ballet and the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf where she later also worked as a ballet-mistress and teacher at the ballet school.

She has danced numerous principal and solo roles in ballets by internationally renowned choreographers such as Mats Ek, William Forsythe, John Cranko, Hans van Manen, George Balanchine, Heinz Spoerli, Uwe Scholz, Youri Vámos, Nils Christie, Christopher Bruce, Judith Jamison, and Paul Taylor.

Young Soon Hue’s career as an international choreographer began with Elle Chánte, which she created in 2001 for the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf. Since then, she has worked with 22 different companies in Europe and beyond, for instance the Tulsa Ballet, Richmond Ballet, Sacramento Ballet in the USA, the Queensland Ballet in Australia, the National Ballet of Korea, the Universal Ballet in Korea, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf, the Aalto Theater Essen, the Augsburg Ballet, Theater Hagen, Tanzcompany Innsbruck, Istanbul Ballet, Ankara Ballet, and Izmir Ballet.

She has created 51 full-length ballets and short pieces, for instance Romeo and Juliet, Carmen, The Firebird, Carmina Burana, DI.VER.SI.TY, Under The Trees Voices, Vanishing Point, Reminiscence, Imperfectly Perfect, Illusion, Contrast, IF, Wave of Emotions, The Moment, This is your life, and Backstage.

In 2006, she was awarded the title „Best Choreographer of the Year“ by the MOM Dance Magazine in Korea. In 2009, she received the Dance critic prize of Korea as the best choreographer and for the best piece of the year with This is your life and Wave of Emotions. In 2010, 2011, and 2023, Young Soon Hue was invited as an artistic director to The Korea World Stars Dance Festival. In 2013, her piece The Moment was awarded a prize as Best Choreography of the year. In 2015, her Romeo and Juliet received a Theater Prize as „Best piece of the year“ from the Augsburg Theater in Germany. In 2019, her piece Imperfectly perfect received the Korean Dance Critics Award.

Since 2024/25, Young Soon Hue has been the rehearsal director at the Semperoper Ballett. She is regularly invited as a guest teacher and choreographer to ballet companies, dance universities, and schools in Europe, the USA, Korea, and Japan.
