The Swede Johan Inger (Stockholm, 1967) completed his dance training at the Royal Swedish Ballet School and at the National Ballet School in Canada. He began his career at the Royal Swedish Ballet in 1985. Johan Inger followed Jiří Kylián's call to the Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) a year later. After his first choreographies in workshops at the NDT, Inger created his first own piece "Mellantid" for the Holland Dance Festival. In 2003 he left the Nederlands Dans Theater to become Artistic Director of the Cullberg Ballet. In the summer of 2008, he resigned from this position to devote himself entirely to choreography and to work throughout Europe. At the Semperoper, he created the choreography and set design for "Empty House" in "Dreamlands", among others. In 2013, his choreography "Walking Mad" also celebrated its premiere here as part of the "Nordic Lights" evening. He also designed the stage and costumes for the premiere. This was followed in 2019 by "Carmen" (Prix Benois de la Danse 2016) and with the German premiere of "Peer Gynt" (2022) Johan Inger will present his second story ballet at the Semperoper.
