In brief

How can a classic fairy tale be entirely refashioned while still preserving the magic of the original story? Kinsun Chan, Artistic Director of the Semperoper Ballett, creates his own version of Cinderella, bursting with emotion, optimism, and splendour – and truly fascinating for both young and old. Supported by the sensitive and captivating music of Sergei Prokofiev, he presents Cinderella and the Prince as two equal protagonists. Together with the ensemble of Semperoper Ballett, Chan searches for the authentically human element within these iconic fairy-tale figures.

The story is relocated to a Grand Hotel. Founded by Cinderella’s parents, the business has – following her mother’s death – been run by her stepmother and stepsisters. The nasty trio humiliate Cinderella, the rightful heir to her mother’s legacy, forcing her to lead a precarious existence in the shadows. There, however, she succeeds in preserving her loving, optimistic and self-confident core through the power of her imagination and creativity. While living in an entirely different world, the Prince is similarly at the fringes of his society. Even at his own birthday party, he is struck by a sense of existential emptiness and the futility of his life – until, that is, he suddenly encounters Cinderella. The magic begins, even without a white horse. It’s no longer possible to say who is saving whom, or who needs the other more.
