Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui

The Belgian choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui is an internationally acclaimed artist who captivates audiences with his cosmopolitan aesthetic. After training at the Performing Arts Research and Training Studios in Brussels, he created his first choreographies as a member of the dance collective Les Ballets C de la B, which were directed by Alain Platel. He has always endeavoured, both as a dancer and a choreographer, to build bridges between cultures. For two decades, he has created numerous often interdisciplinary works which have had a lasting impact on the dance world. Since the 2022/23 season, he has held the position of Artistic Director of the Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève. In addition to numerous awards, including three nominations to the title ‘Choreographer of the Year’ by the dance journal Tanz and two Olivier Awards, he was also nominated for a Tony Award in the category ‘Best Choreography’ for the Broadway musical Jagged Little Pill. In 2010, he founded the Antwerp-based dance company Eastman, which he continues to direct. His works for Eastman include Babel(words), Puz/zle, 4D, TeZukA and Fractus V. Cherkaoui has worked as a choreographer with renowned dance companies, including the Dutch National Ballet, the Paris Opera Ballet, the GöteborgsOperans Danskompani, the Stuttgart Ballet, and the Los Angeles Dance Project. Moreover, he created the choreography for the 2012 film adaptation of Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, directed by Joe Wright, and for the Ring des Nibelungen at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin. He has also staged operas such as Nicholas Lens' Shell Shock, Philipp Glass' Satyagraha and Pelléas et Mélisande by Claude Debussy.
