When little Peter opens the garden gate one morning to visit the large green meadow, he has no idea that an encounter with the Wolf will lead to a series of adventures and dangers and, in the end, a triumphant march for him and his animal friends. »Peter and the Wolf«, written by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev in 1936 as a symphonic fairy tale for children and now a well-loved classic, is performed around the world in numerous different arrangements today.
»Jakub Flügelbunt«, a work by Czech composer Miroslav Srnka commissioned by the Semperoper Dresden, is also a fairy tale for both young and old. The enigmatic subtitle »… and Magdalena Rotenband, or: How low a bird can sing« takes us straight to the heart of the matter: The young bird Jakub, having overestimated his abilities during his first attempts at flying, has suffered an accident and is now unable to take to the air. But the wise owl teaches him that he possesses other qualities, and soon he wins the running event at the forest sports championships. Jakub’s interest, however, is drawn beyond his triumph to the seemingly unattainable Magdalene, who presents him with his champion’s ribbon. Experiencing many highs and lows and at times filled with doubt, Jakub learns the meaning of solidarity and proves himself to be a true friend. In the end, the once-overconfident youngster has proved his worth as a fine young bird… and discovered a respectable baritone voice. A work for three singers and orchestra.
