Ludwig van Beethoven
«Missa solemnis» in D major, Opus 123
Broadcasted by MDR Figaro on 13 February and by 3sat on 14 February
In memoriam Dresden
The monumental score of Ludwig van Beethoven’s «Missa solemnis», Op. 123, includes the composer’s inscription «From the heart – may it return to the heart». Shattering contemporary notions of sacred music, the focus of the work is the concluding «Agnus Dei», which Beethoven intended as a dramatic
«plea for peace, both within and without». Christian Thielemann will conduct the «Missa» at the traditional requiem concert on Dresden’s Day of Remembrance. The Staatskapelle and State Opera Choir have been performing this annual concert since 1951, to commemorate Dresden’s destruction on
13/14 February 1945.
