In his lecture for the Mozart Festival of 2022, the renowned musicologist and Mozart expert Laurenz Lütteken will shed light on one of the most exciting themes underlying the three Mozart-Da Ponte operas, namely the Enlightenment as it impacted Vienna in the reign of Emperor Joseph II. It was the monarch himself who personally approved the operatic version of the scandalous play »The Marriage of Figaro« and who supposedly suggested the story of »Così fan tutte« to Mozart. Further, his rigid policy of reform and »enlightenment from above« in the 1780s served to transform society. Laurenz Lütteken explores this social upheaval through Mozart’s operas. The lecture is not primarily aimed at experts but rather at all interested members of the public.
