In a celebration of neoclassical dance, this three-part ballet evening opens with George Balanchine’s »Stravinsky Violin Concerto« from 1972. With great clarity and simplicity, Balanchine employs a bare stage in order to highlight the raw physicality of the 20 dancers, dressed only in bodysuits. Hans van Manen’s delicate work »Kleines Requiem« (1996) for three female and four male dancers was inspired by the powerful and minimalist composition of the same name by Henryk Mikolaj Górecki. It is the first ballet by this master to be performed at the Semperoper. The evening concludes with a highlight of German lied, namely Richard Strauss’s »Four Last Songs«. The poem »Im Abendrot« by Joseph von Eichendorff, the last in the cycle, inspired Strauss to new heights while passing review over his artistic life. One recurring theme permeating the brilliant and abstract ballets of David Dawson is mankind in the cycle of life. In the year 2020 he translates this »musical farewell« for soprano and orchestra into the language of dance.
