Every season the Semperoper organises symposia around special programme themes and highlights. These educational events are aimed at both music lovers and experts. This season, for example, the new production of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s »The Magic Flute« by Josef E. Köpplinger provides an opportunity to take a closer look at this universal work, which for decades has headed the list of popular productions at many opera houses. In its thematic density, »The Magic Flute« still throws up questions relevant to modern audiences as well as offering a wealth of suggestive material. The venue will be Dresden Central Library, located in the city’s Kulturpalast. This season’s second symposium, run in cooperation with »Carl Maria von Weber« College of Music, is dedicated to the work and artistic influence of the composer Aribert Reimann, who was last year’s Composer-in-Residence to the Staatskapelle Dresden. This season sees the Dresden premiere of Reimann’s chamber opera »Die Gespenstersonate« in Semper Zwei. It is always worthwhile exploring the work of this German composer in view of his close affinity to the human voice and cornucopia of compositional ideas.
