The Semperoper Foundation Prize is intended to honour outstanding performers who are either members of the opera company or closely associated with it. In particular, the Foundation aims to promote artistic excellence and diversity at the historic Saxon State Opera. At the same time, the prize, which was established in 1993, is intended to consolidate and enhance the global reputation of the Semperoper in unique fashion. In past years, the Semperoper Foundation Prize has gone to Christian Thielemann, Evelyn Herlitzius, Georg Zeppenfeld, the Semperoper Ballett and, most recently, the dancer Jón Vallejo.
The recipient for the 2020/21 season is Omer Meir Wellber, Principal Guest Conductor of Saxon State Opera. The Israeli maestro, who made his Dresden debut in 2010 with Richard Strauss’s »Daphne«, went on to enjoy huge success with his interpretations of Mozart operas as well as with György Ligeti’s »Le Grand Macabre« and many other performances. The prize will be awarded at an opera gala featuring singers from the Semperoper ensemble as well as the State Opera Chorus, which received this accolade in 2017 on the occasion of its 200th anniversary. The soprano Annette Dasch, who enjoys equal success as an opera star and television presenter (e.g. »Annette DaschSalon« on 3sat), will not only host the evening but also delight the audience with her singing.
