Tour Diary

Antwerp 2015

February 26th, 2015

What a busy day it is! Starting the day with a performance of David Dawson’s new creation »Tristan +Isolde« and then off we fly to Antwerp, Belgium. Tomorrow, we will premiere »An Evening with the Works of William Forsythe« at the deSingel Kulturcampus. It is going to be our last tour this season; amazing and an honor, it is taking us to this very theater. Opened in 1980, the deSingel is an international cultural center, which quickly became one of the most important theaters for dance, music, theater and architecture in the region of Flanders in Belgium. As always, our technicians already flew into Antwerp yesterday to set everything up for our arrival today. They did the technical set-up, the lighting, rolled out our dance floor, and unpacked our costumes and sets and much much more: performance on stage is always as good as the performance backstage! Now, we just need to arrive! Tonight there will be no time to get to know the city. More likely, we will drop into our beds after an exciting, yet exhausting and very long day. Tomorrow is going to be great:  another day, another theatre, another performance!

Sunny greetings from Antwerp! What a beautiful day today and even the late risers in our group had the chance to explore the city before our daily training at the theatre at 12:30 o’clock. Antwerp is such a beautiful city! The town hall at Grote market, the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal (The Cathedral of our Ladies) and all those yummy Belgium waffles everywhere…
With half a million inhabitants Antwerp is the most populous city in Belgium. It is directly located on the river Scheldt, which is linked to the North Sea, thus giving Antwerp optimal access to international trading operations. Yet back in the theatre we start our daily class in the studios of the deSingel. Afterwards, we continue on to our General Rehearsal, a run-through on stage, at 14:00 for »In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated«, »Neue Suite« and »Enemy in the Figure«. Later, we have a few more hours to relax, get our hair and make-up done, prepare our pointe shoes and warm up. At 20:00 o’clock it is THE time again, time for our last premiere outside of Dresden for this season!

No time for Belgium waffles for us today, as we are simply too busy. Today, we have two performances, which means daily class at noon, hair and make-up and onto the stage, relaxing a bit and a push to the repeat-button. But that is tour-life, right?! Nevertheless, it is exceptionally exciting and tremendously special to have the opportunity to perform at another venue and show the world what we can do. And in between two shows? We hop onto the selfie-train and take some pictures of our life on tour…

Our last tour for this season is done! Two wonderful, but also stressful weeks with performances in Barcelona and Antwerp it has been! Today now, we are flying back home to Dresden. Not though, before finally having the time for devouring on one of those delicious Belgium Waffles… at the airport instead of in one of those cute little cafés in the city, but still! Impressions of the tour and Antwerp to be found below, while we say good-bye for one day off, before taking up rehearsals for Aaron S. Watkin’s »Swan Lake« again tomorrow.
