Dramaturge Juliane Schunke interviewed in the last Intermission Talk of this season the Spanish Ballet Master Carmen Piqueras and talked to her about her profession, what her duties were during the Corona period and what music made her time a little shorter.

Ballet Masters are an essential secret task force of every dance company. They are responsible for the daily training and leading of all the company rehearsals. The corona break has shown once again the importance of this position in maintaining the general harmony of the company and in keeping it moving forward.

The Spanish Ballet Master Carmen Piqueras has called Dresden her professional home since 2006 (note: in 2020). After her first ballet lessons in Murcia, she trained as a dancer in Madrid, then was engaged in various companies before she was brought to the Semperoper Ballett in 2006 by Aaron S. Watkin as a dancer of the Corps de Ballet. In 2011 she was promoted to Coryphée and has been Ballet Master since 2016. She is mainly responsible for the training and rehearsal of the group choreographies. However, the change from dancer to ballet master not only entails a change of tasks, but completely changes the perspective on dance, movement in general and what it means to create art.

In the Corona Crisis, the Ballet Master's field of work also constantly presents new challenges, which are not always related to dance alone. The usual procedure of training, rehearsals and performances is suspended, but a completely new plan had to be worked out so that the dancers can still train to some extent and keep fit. And especially during this time, an open ear for the problems and questions of the dancers is very important. But the crisis also gives the opportunity to concentrate on details like forming and executing movements and to train the dancers methodically inside.

Carmen Piqueras’ music request is a song by the Spanish flamenco singer Camarón de la Isla from 1979, which deals with dreams and the passage of time – a song as if made for a time in which everything seems to stand still and yet continues to run.
