New Production of »Norma« opens the 2021/22 Premiere Season

Szene aus der Oper »Norma«

Dresden, 21 September 2021: Two new productions by (opera) director Peter Konwitschny will open and close the marathon run of 15 new productions for 2021/22 at the Semperoper Dresden. The season opens on Saturday, 2 October 2021, with »Norma«, probably the most famous opera by the Italian composer Vincenzo Bellini. This staging of the melodrama, which premiered in Milan in 1831, is the first in Dresden for 110 years.

In his Dresden »Norma«, the equally celebrated and controversial director Peter Konwitschny will apply his renowned sensitivity and analytical penetration to uncover the socio-political conflict that is the driving force of this piece. The suffering of the wife and mother, bound by religious obligations and whose love breaks with convention, shatters the prevailing norms of society. Stage designer Johannes Leiacker has brilliantly created spaces which perfectly match Konwitschny’s ideas and the musical momentum of the opera.

The premiere on 2 October 2021 will also see the Semperoper debut of Spanish soprano Yolanda Auyanet. Her interpretation of the title role and the famous aria »Casta Diva« has already thrilled audiences around the world, most recently in March 2021 at the Teatro Real de Madrid. Auyanet will be joined by Dresden ensemble members Stepanka Pucalkova, Roxana Incontrera, Alexandros Stavrakakis and Jürgen Müller along with guest artist Dmytro Popov in the role of Pollione. The Staatskapelle Dresden will be conducted by Gaetano d’Espinosa.

For the new Dresden production of »Norma«, a »premiere teaser«, namely an excerpt from an orchestral or cast rehearsal, will be performed on 25 September 2021 in the upstairs foyer of the Semperoper. Discussions with members of the directing team will provide interesting insights into the work, the music and the interpretation. In addition, introductions to the opera are offered in the opera cellar 45 minutes before each performance.
