The resumption of live performances with two premieres

The Semperoper Dresden will welcome back audiences to its venues when the new Coronavirus Protection Ordinance comes into force on 15 January 2022. After the Staatskapelle Dresden perform their 5th symphony concert, the musical events for January continue with new productions of »The Bald Soprano« and »The Other Wife«. The programme running until 23 January 2022 will also feature Mozart’s »The Magic Flute«. Unfortunately, the originally planned performances of »Die Fledermaus« are now cancelled.

To celebrate the return of live performances, the Semperoper invites guests to the premiere of Luciano Chailly’s chamber opera »The Bald Soprano« on Sunday, 16 January 2022. Based on the absurdist masterpiece of the same name by French playwright Eugène Ionesco, director Barbora Horáková has restaged this musical work for Dresden. In our Semper Zwei venue, where Horáková successfully staged Peter Eötvös’s »The Golden Dragon« in 2019, this musical rarity by Chailly, first performed in Vienna in 1986, can now be enjoyed in its German premiere.

Previously scheduled for the 2019/2020 season, the world premiere of »The Other Wife« by Torsten Rasch will take place on Saturday, 22 January 2022. Commissioned by Saxon State Opera, the Dresden-born composer has created – in collaboration with librettist Helmut Krausser – a »music theatre in ten scenes« based on the biblical story of Abraham and Sarah. This production for the Semperoper is staged by Immo Karaman. Exploiting the visual skills of video artist László Zsolt Bordos (Bordos.Art.Works), Karaman succeeds in his extraordinary realisation of this opera about the origin of the three great monotheistic religions. Evelyn Herlitzius and Markus Marquardt will interpret the Old Testament figures, while the Iranian-American artist Sussan Deyhim is a guest performer in the role of the Eyewitness. The Staatskapelle will be conducted by Michael Wendeberg.
