Marcelo Gomes

Artistic Manager Semperoper Ballett

Brazilian dancer Marcelo Gomes began his education at the Helena Lobato and Dalal Achar Ballet Schools in Rio de Janeiro. Having won the Revelation Prize (1993) of the Festival de Dança de Joinville in Brazil, he continued his studies in the USA. Up to now, he has been awarded the Prix de Lausanne (1996) and the Prix Benois de la Danse (2008). Between 1997 and 2017, Marcelo Gomes danced at the American Ballet Theatre, holding the positions as First Soloist and Principal, amongst others. During this period of time, he performed in virtually every full-length classical ballet. Mr Gomes’s international performances have also been shown at The Royal Ballet, the Dutch National Ballet and the Teatro Municipal Do Rio de Janeiro. Marcelo Gomes has also worked with the Teatro Colón, the Tokyo Ballet and Matthew Bourne's New Adventures, among others. As a choreographer, Marcelo Gomes created pieces for American Ballet Theatre and ABT’s Studio Company, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, The Kings of the Dance, Teatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro and Washington Ballet. In the 2018/19 season, Mr Gomes made his debut at the Semperoper as Prince Siegfried in Aaron S. Watkin’s »Swan Lake« and as Oberon in Frederick Ashton’s »The Dream«.  With the 2020/21 season, he was contracted as Principal Dancer and Ballet Master with the Semperoper Ballett. Having been appointed the Artistic Advisor of the company in the course of the 2022/23 season, Marcelo Gomes is co-leading the Semperoper Ballett as Artistic Manager together with Company Manager Adi Luick during the 2023/24 season.
