Focus on Richard Strauss in the 2013/14 season

While the Semperoper Dresden ends its celebrations of the Wagner anniversary with »Tannhäuser« and »Tristan und Isolde«, a new jubilee will be coming up in the 2013/14 season:
It is the 150th anniversary of the birth of Richard Strauss. His connection to Dresden is particularly close, as nine of his 15 operas premièred here under the baton of visionary music directors such as Ernst von Schuch, Fritz Busch and finally Karl Böhm.
The celebrations start with a new production of »Elektra« in January 2014. Making her debut at the Semperoper, director and Zurich playhouse head Barbara Frey, will show the conflicts, constraints and seemingly inevitable necessities inside the House of Atreus. The nuances will be accentuated musically by conductor Christian Thielemann, together with the Sächsische Staatskapelle and soloists Evelyn Herlitzius, Waltraud Meier, Anne Schwanewilms and René Pape.
The Semperoper honors Strauss’ jubilee with a number of noteworthy revivals. Soloists include Soile Isokoski, Marjorie Owens, Romy Petrick, Barbara Senator, Daniela Sindram, Erika Sunnegårdh, Burkhard Fritz, Jürgen Müller and Peter Rose.
The focus on Strauss is completed by two of his early works – »Guntram« as a concert performance and the Sung Poem »Feuersnot« (»Fire Famine«) – and a ballet-homage to Strauss, showing, amongst others, his »Josephslegende« (»The Legend of Joseph«).
