»I must surrender myself to my fate, hard though it is.
I shall go to America where I can at least love as I wish.«
Chevalier Des Grieux
The theology student, Renato Des Grieux, meets the young Manon Lescaut at a post coach station. To save her from a life behind convent walls, he abducts the beautiful Manon without further ado. Their relationship is one of passionate lust until the greedy girl is weary of a love full of financial deprivation and goes to live with the rich treasurer-general Geronte in Paris. After a while, however, Manon is bored by the cold luxury. When her villainous brother Lescaut brings Des Grieux back to her, their old love is rekindled and the young couple decide to escape. But Manon gathers together valuables until Geronte finds out. She is imprisoned and, when the attempted escape of Des Grieux and her brother fails, she is deported to America. Des Grieux manages to join her on board and love in liberty seems within their grasp. Manon quickly collapses from exhaustion in America and dies in the desert.
