The married Marschallin regains youthful vigour through her love to the younger Octavian. However, she painfully recognises that the march of time cannotbe held up. When Octavian is required to present a silver rose to the woman betrothed to Baron Ochs auf Lerchenau (who covets a large dowry), the inevitable occurs: the young man and bride fall in love. The baron is thwarted in his plans by Octavian’s comic masquerade. Finally, the Marschallin arrives to clear up the ensuing mess – and she releases Octavian: »Hab mir’s gelobt, ihn lieb zu haben in der richtigen Weis’ / I vowed to love him rightly.«
