Orlando is overcome by a frenzied passion. Based on Ludovico Ariosto’s chivalric epic »Orlando furioso«, George Frideric Handel created a fantastic and passionate Baroque opera in the truest sense of the word. Full of vigour, luxuriating in abundant melody, and with flashes of delightful humour, the opera tells of a jealous hero whose adoration of Angelica does not stop her rejecting him for the simple Medoro. A raging, merciless Orlando persecutes the fleeing couple until he believes them both dead. Only a magic spell is able to release him from his madness. When, full of remorse, he realizes what he has done, Angelica and Medoro reappear to offer their forgiveness.
