Synopsis

ACT I
JERUSALEM

The Hebrew people are filled with infinite terror by the attack of the Babylonian troops.
Zaccaria, the High Priest, has the daughter of the enemy king in his power. Ass hostage, Fenena is supposed to save the city from destruction. The people pluck up courage again and go into battle.
Ismaele draws closer to Fenena and tells her of his love.
Abigaille forces an entry into the Temple with disguised warriors and declares it captured.
The Hebrew troops are utterly defeated.
Nabucco marches into the Temple with his troops. Zaccaria holds a dagger to the throat of Nabucco’s daughter. Ismaele saves his beloved.
Nabucco orders the destruction and plunder of the city.
The Hebrews are deported to Babylon.

ACT II
BABYLON

Abigaille has discovered a secret document. She is not Nabucco’s daughter.
Fenena has released the Hebrew prisoners.
The High Priest uses Abigaille as a tool for his intrigues.
The priests proclaim her queen. Fenena converts to the Hebrews faith.
The Hebrews attack the traitor Ismaele.
Abigaille demands the crown from Fenena.
Nabucco intervenes.
He proclaims himself divine and orders the people to worship him.

ACT III
BABYLON

Abigaille has secured power with the help of the priests. The High Priest demands from her the death of the imprisoned Hebrews.
She coaxes Nabucco to confirm this judgement. Nabucco has also committed his daughter Fenena to death.
Abigaille makes his helpless situation clear to him.
Nabucco hears the lamentation of the imprisoned Hebrews. The Hebrews lament their wretched fate in captivity. Zaccaria’s prophecy of the fall of Babylon allows them to meet their death with more composure.

ACT IV
BABYLON

Nabucco awakes from his severe nightmares.
His daughter Fenena is led to execution. In his despair, he turns to her new God. He overcomes his self-made isolation.
He hastens into battle with his soldiers. The execution of the Hebrews is being prepared. Nabucco prevents the massacre.The King of Babylon grants the Hebrews their freedom and declares his faith in their God.Abigaille takes her own life.
