Wozzeck’s attention is caught by signs and indications that are not perceived as such by others. A vision in particular appears to him to be a message of elementary importance. He tries to communicate but casts darkness around him.
Marie, the mother of Wozzeck’s child, is admiring the Drum-Major. Wozzeck is told of Marie’s unfaithfulness and confronts her. At a celebration he watches how Marie dances with the Drum-Major. Despair and certainty grow and events take on an apocalyptic dimension.
