Fidelio’s real name is Leonore. Disguised as a man, she is hired by the jailer Rocco. Her beloved Florestan, the archenemy of the powerful Don Pizarro, is a prisoner in this jail. When minister Don Fernando gives notice that he is coming for an inspection, Pizarro orders the death of Florestan. Fidelio/Leonore digs the grave of her beloved in his cell, always hoping that she can prevent the murder. This succeeds at the last second. An opera about invincible hope.
