Walther von Stolzing has come to Nuremberg and has fallen in love with Eva, the daughter of goldsmith Pogner. He learns that she must wed the person who wins the upcoming singing competition. Since only master singers can take part in the competition, Stolzing has to learn the rules of master singing in a crash course. Which proves impossible. When he faces the masters, he breaks all the rules of the game and is not admitted to the competition. Only Hans Sachs tries to understand his singing and to help him. The renowned master singer Beckmesser would also like to win Eva in the match. When he serenades her at night, Sachs accompanies every mistake with a hammer blow. The city is subject to a commotion that turns into a free-for-all. Then everyone celebrates on the festival grounds. Hans Sachs points the scrutiny of the judging citizenry towards the right person…
