The craziest things happen at Prince Orlofsky's masked ball as the consequence of some earlier incidents. It transpires that once, after a drunken night out, Gabriel von Eisenstein left his collegue Falke to run around dressed in a bat costume. Now revange is on the cards. Eisenstein, who has been given a prison sentence for insulting an official, turns up at the ball without his wife. He tries to win the heart of a mysterious Hungarian countess, and does not realize that it is his own spouse, Rosalinde. She, on the other hand, has been following her own amorous plans. Meanwhile Rosalinde's maid Adele, disguised as an actress, is thoroughly enjoying the attention of the illustrious ball guests. The evening proceeds with a serious of mistaken identities and deceptions, only to be happily resolved with much champagne and dancing.
