To the horror of all those involved, the theatre director decides that an opera seria and a commedia must be performed simultaneously in order to save time. The result is the story of Ariadne, heartbroken at being abandoned by Theseus, who takes comfort in the prophecy of the effervescent Zerbinetta that she is soon to find a new lover.
Exploiting the device of »a play within a play«, Richard Strauss’s masterpiece is a brilliant interweaving of heroic opera and knockabout comedy.
