Mustafa, the Bey of Algiers, has become bored of his wife Elvira; he would prefer to marry an Italian girl. So when Isabella is shipwrecked onto the coast, it seems as if his wish has been fulfilled. However, Isabella quickly recognises an Italian slave of the Bey to be her former lover Lindoro. After much scheming, and not a little confusion, Isabella and Lindoro succeed in their daring plan to flee under the very nose of the Bey – and Mustafa returns to his Elvira.
