Turandot

In order to resist her many suitors, Princess Turandot sets the following test: She will only marry the man who is able to solve three riddles of her devising. And the hitch: anyone who fails to complete the test will be beheaded. Even the large number of failed candidates does not put off Prince Calaf, the son of the deposed King of Tartary, from embarking on this deadly adventure while in disguise. And then, miraculously, Calaf succeeds in solving the riddles. Yet Turandot is not prepared to honour her part of the bargain. She wishes to remain distant, unapproachable – and these are the characteristics that Andreas Homoki brings to light in his portrayal of Puccini’s femme fatale, in a production that incorporates modern media.
