Hansel and Gretel try to forget their hunger with dance and song before their mother, annoyed by their light-heartedness, sends them into the forest to look for berries. There, brother and sister lose their way and, finally overcome by tiredness, they are brought to restful sleep by the sandman. 14 guardian angels accompany them through their dreams until night is over, when the dew fairy wakes the children up. Soon they arrive at a gingerbread house whose owner, a child-eating witch, imprisons the youngsters. With their life in mortal danger, Hansel and Gretel succeed in disposing of the witch. When the worried parents finally appear the gingerbread children have turned back to their human forms, and the triumph of good over evil is complete.
