Whoever can shoot a proper trial shot before the prince will receive Agathe along with the family forestry. Kaspar convinces Max to cast shotgun pellets at night in Wolf Canyon; these never miss their mark. What Max does not know: The last pellet is steered by Samiel, the »Black Hunter«. Max starts with this pellet in his barrel. The target is a white dove: Agathe screams – the dove flies away – the shot is fired – Agathe falls to the ground. Kaspar was hit. The prince forgives Max for the attempted fraud.
