The rope which the Norns weave to hold everything together snaps. Siegfried leaves Brünnhilde to do heroic deeds; he places her under the protection of the ring. At the Nibelungs, he succumbs to the perfidious plans of Hagen (Alberich’s son), King Gunther and Gutrune. He betrays Brünnhilde and, with her, his love; he is then killed. Brünnhilde also dies. The Earth and the seat of the gods lie in ashes. Gunther and Hagen fall prey to lust for the ring. The Rhine maidens once again take possession of the ring.
