Siegmund and Sieglinde’s son Siegfried is raised by Alberich’s brother Mime. Since Siegfried knows no fear, he is successful in reforging Nothung, the broken sword of his father. He tries it out on Fafner who, transformed into a dragon, guards Valhalla and the ring. The blood of the dragon gives Siegfried the power to understand the language of the birds; he learns that Mime wants to kill him. He kills Mime and goes – equipped with the ring and a magic cap – to the Rock of the Valkyries. Siegfried and Brünnhilde fall in love with each another.
