The impresario from the Canary Islands is back, and still trying to engage the ravishing singer Dorina for his theatre. As ever, she is playing hard to get. And, as ever, the impresario is interested in more than just Dorina’s vocal skills … Twenty years after Domenico Sarro’s version of this intermezzo, which appeared on last season’s Semperoper programme, Giovanni Battista Martini composed music to this short, cheerfully subversive play by Metastasio.
Will Dorina now answer the prayers of the shady agent and follow his invitation? As last year, the Italian composer Lucia Ronchetti has created an »Intermezzo in an Intermezzo« especially for the Semperoper. »Sub-Plot« borrows its forms from opera seria, particularly that work which provided the occasion for the premiere of Metastasio’s Intermezzo, and which laid the foundation for the success of Vienna’s future Court Poet to the Opera: »Didone abbandonata«. Lucia Ronchetti has created a mini-opera at whose centre the abandoned Didone fights for the love of Enea while defending herself against the romantic advances of Iarba.
