La gazza ladra / The Thieving Magpie

Gioachino Rossini is well known for his feverish tempi:on stage, in the orchestra and even while composing. In fact, Rossini himself described the speed at which he (allegedly) wrote down the famous overture to the opera »La gazza ladra« (commissioned by Milan’s La Scala): »I wrote the prelude on the day of the premiere, locked in the attic of La Scala by the director. I was guarded by four engineers who had strict instructions to throw my original score, page by page, out of the window to the waiting copyists below for transcription. In case the score was uncompleted, they had instructions to throw me out of the window instead.« The resulting opera, based on one of the most popular French boulevard plays of the day, is equally brutal. The maid Ninetta feels the long arm of the law when Fabrizio, a scorned admirer, schemes to secure her execution. The young girl has supposedly stolen silver cutlery in order to help her father, a deserter from the army. At the last minute the true thief is discovered: a magpie. However, even Rossini did not attempt to set its sly cawing to music …
