»Don’t just sit around. Do something. Believe in me. Believe in yourselves. Believe in something!« It’s rather easy to be a child of good fortune if you just trust in your natural talents. In any case, that’s the way the hero of Stefan Johannes Hanke’s play »The Devil with the Three Golden Hairs«, based on the fairy-tale of the same name by the Brothers Grimm, approaches life. With rock solid confidence and optimism he extricates himself from the King’s deadly intrigues and even manages to pass through the Devil’s kitchen without a scratch. In the end he manages to heal a sickly land, before – as if there was really any doubt – marrying the beautiful princess.
This children’s opera from 2012 was commissioned by Hanover State Opera from Stefan Johannes Hanke. Brimming with the musical high spirits of the lucky hero, at times the mood turns rather more ironic and even bleak. Since its premiere, »The Devil with the Three Golden Hairs« has captivated both young and old with its fairy-tale magic.
