Richard-Strauss-Days

From November, 6th to 23rd 2014

2014 marks the 150th anniversary of Richard Strauss’ birthday. The Semper Opera Dresden takes this opportunity of honoring the composer in two celebratory seasons, in 2013 / 14 and 2014 / 15, with a first-class program. The relationship between Richard Strauss and Dresden is particularly close: nine of the 15 operas premiered here under chief musical conductors Ernst von Schuch, Fritz Busch and Karl Böhm. One of the festival’s highlights include the »Richard-Strauss-Days« from November 6 to 23, 2014. The three operas by Strauss »Capriccio«, »Daphne« and »Arabella« will be performed in various serious with exquisite casts. International stars Renee Fleming and Thomas Hampson, among others, will be guests at the Semper Opera. The ballet evening »Legends« combines newly created choreographies by Belgian choreographer Stijn Celis and the former artistic director of the Bolshoi ballet Alexei Ratmansky in an homage to Richard Strauss. The series will be complemented by an evening of Lieder with Thomas Hampson, a screening of the 1926 silent film »The Knight of the Rose« – the premiere at the Semper Opera in 1926 was conducted by R. Strauss himself – accompanied live by the Staatskapelle Dresden. In addition, there will be a philharmonic concert with the Staatskapelle conducted by Christian Thielemann with Renee Fleming and Robert Langbein as soloists and two chamber concerts – all this ensure the »Richard-Strauss- Days« will be a memorable event.
