The three‑part work »Jewels« is Balanchine’s tribute to the »golden years« of ballet, whilst at the same time celebrating the countries in which the choreographer lived and where he found inspiration. Following the American »Rubies« and »Diamonds« (an homage to Russian ballet under Marius Petipa), the 2010 / 11 season now sees the Semperoper Ballett present the third part of this great work: »Emeralds«. After leaving Russia, Balanchine belonged for a short time in 1920’s Paris to the »Ballets Russes« run by the brilliant impresario, Sergej Diaghilev. In »Emeralds« the choreographer celebrates some of France’s delights: »the elegance, the lifestyle, the clothes and the perfume«. To musical extracts from the works »Pelléas et Mélisande« and »Shylock« by French composer Gabriel Fauré, Balanchine conjures up the lyrical chorography of the era of romantic ballet: the danse l’école, of the Sylphides.

»Emeralds« is part of Balanchine’s »Jewels«.
