It is said that Balanchine conceived his idea for the first ever fulllength abstract ballet after visiting a famous New York jewellery store. The three sections may be different from each other and selfcontained, yet the theme of «Jewels» runs through his work and pays homage to the three gemstones in his life: France (»Emeralds«), America (»Rubies«) and Russia (»Diamonds«). »Rubies«, set to Igor Stravinsky‘s jazzy Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra, embodies the energy and rhythm of this sophisticated new world.

»Rubies« is part of Balanchine’s »Jewels«.
