It goes without saying that there was only one option for George Balanchine in his selection of the music for »Diamonds«: a period in his life was intertwined with Tchaikovsky. The idea for the first full-length abstract ballet in the world came to Balanchine after he had visited a famous New York jeweller. Even though the three sections are different and self-sufficient, interwoven with the biography of their creator, this ballet is a homage to the three treasures in his life: France (»Emeralds«), America (»Rubies«) and Russia (»Diamonds«). Two precious stones are now in the repertoire of the Semperoper. »Emeralds« will complete it in the future.
»Diamonds« is part of Balanchine’s »Jewels«.
