»Cinderella« is a much-loved character common to many European fairy tales, and one who has also long secured her place in the classical ballet repertoire. At the premiere of Sergei Prokofiev’s »Cinderella« at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre in 1945 it quickly became clear that the composer had created a work for the ages, one which even today has lost nothing of its charm and vivacity. Keeping a respectful distance to the traditional story, Stijn Celis’ contemporary version tells of a modern girl whose suffocating life in a dysfunctional family leads to alternating bouts of reality and dreams. Accompanied by the memories of her dead mother, she sets off on a journey to the world of love, finally meeting »her« prince. In his interpretation Celis portrays a touching voyage of human fulfilment and self-discovery.
